Renewable Energy

Renewable energy sources are those that can be produced or regenerated in a short period of time. These sources would include-

  • Solar power (both photovoltaic & thermal)
  • Hydroelectric
  • Wind
  • Waves
  • Geothermal
  • Non-fossil fuels

Solar Power is the only consistent, reliable energy source in the Middle East;

    • Hydroelectricity- requires a large volume of water and a large head to provide the potential –to- kinetic energy conversion.
    • Wind Power- requires consistent high winds, usually at an exposed location, to drive the turbines.
    • Wave Power- requires a good differential between high & low water, and a large, continuous swell.
    • Geothermal Power- requires an area of volcanic or thermal activity to supply heat to circulating water supplies, to abstract heat- for direct heating, or for steam generation.
    • Non-fossil Fuels- such as timber and animal dung can be used in a small, local way for heating or cooking.
    • Solar Power - Energy from the sun amounts to more than 2100 kWh/m2/year in the Middle East; twice the amount that falls on the UK

Solar power can be used in three ways: direct conversion of solar energy into electricity (photovoltaic) or by concentrating the sun’s heating power onto a boiler for direct heating, or steam generation (heliostatic), or for heating water for domestic use. This heat may be used immediately to increase the feed temperature of hot water systems; or be stored in an underground ‘heat-sink’ for use later.

Scale of supply may be large, for cities, or small scale for individual homes, farms, or street lighting. Properties already connected to the power grid have the opportunity of selling their surplus energy at peak times, back to the energy provider- a benefit to both the householder and other consumers.

Solar Power is the only consistent, reliable energy source in the Middle East;PROTEC continues to offer sustainable and innovative solutions that can provide energy efficient and cost effective systems.
