Water desalination processes are implemented for the separation of dissolved salts and other minerals from raw water. Several different common technologies exist for this application. Thermal desalination and high pressure membrane separation are a couple of the aforementioned desalination methods. Multi-effect distillation, multi-stage flash distillation and reverse osmosis are a few of the common processes used for water desalination.


Reverse osmosis is often used in commercial and residential water filtration. It is also one of the methods used to desalinate seawater. Sometimes reverse osmosis is used to purify liquids in which water is an undesirable impurity (e.g., ethanol).

In multiple-effect units, steam is condensed on one side of a tube wall while saline water is evaporated on the other side. The energy used for evaporation is the heat of condensation of the steam. Usually there is a series of condensation-evaporation processes taking place. The saline water is usually applied to the tubes in the form of a thin film so that it will evaporate easily.

In a multistage-flash unit, the incoming seawater passes through the heating stage(s) and is heated further in the heat recovery sections of each subsequent stage. After passing through the last heat recovery section, and before entering the first stage where flash-boiling (or flashing) occurs, the feed water is further heated in the brine heater using externally supplied steam.
